An IP address (Internet Protocol) is an ip address of your network hardware. It helps connect your computer to your network and other devices around the world. An IP address is made up of numbers or characters.
An example of an IP address would be: 5061:542;215
All devices that are connected by an Internet connection have a unique IP address, meaning that billions of IP addresses are required. This requirement has been met with the new IP version IPv6.
There are two versions of IP: IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4 is an older version with over 4 billion IP addresses. However, the new version of IPv6 can provide billions of IP addresses to meet the needs of all Internet users and devices.
The IPv4 version is used to configure the IP address to a numeric value (number), which may conflict with other IP addresses. This is why IPv6 adopted the hexadecimal method to provide unique IP addresses to billions of users worldwide.
An example of an IPv6 IP address would be:
4ggr: 1925: 5656: 7: 600: t4tt: tc54: 98vt
There are some types of IP addresses, such as private IP addresses, public IP addresses, static IP addresses, and dynamic IP addresses. Let’s talk about these different types of IP addresses one by one:
A private IP address is the address of your device that is connected to a home or business network. If you have some separate equipment connected to an ISP (Internet service provider), then all your devices will have a unique private IP address. This IP address cannot be accessed from devices outside your home or business network.
For example: 192:514:51
Private IP addresses are not unique because there are a limited number of devices on your network.
You can find the private IP address of your device using some techniques. If you are a Windows user, just go to the command prompt and enter the ipconfig command. If you are a Mac user, you must enter the following ifconfig command in your terminal application
If you are using the Internet on a mobile phone, you can go to the WiFi settings to locate the IP address. IOS users can obtain an IP address by clicking on the ‘i’ button next to the network to which they are connected. Android users can click on the network name in their WiFi settings, and the IP address will be displayed.
Your public IP address is the primary IP address to which your home or business network is connected. This IP address connects you to the world and is unique to all users.
To find out your public IP address, simply visit the Support All site in your browser, and public IP and other browser information will be displayed.
All private and public IP addresses can be static or dynamic. Manually configured and set IP addresses on your device’s network are called static IP addresses. Static IP addresses cannot be changed automatically.
When you configure a router with the Internet, the dynamic IP address is automatically configured and assigned to your network IP. This distribution of IP addresses is managed by the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). DHCP can be your Internet router that provides an IP address to your network in your home or business environment.
